I received the message a few weeks before, that Lola's presence was being requested for a show at the Pub Down Under in Saint John NB. A really good friend of mine, knowing how much I enjoy the Durians (a 3 piece "multi instrumental industrial electronica" band from New York) ,asked me to live paint for them on their “Lets Get Really Weird” tour. After a few air punches and hoots n hollers, I wrote back calmly and professionally , “sure”. If you attended Midsummer Madness this year, you would likely have seen me in the front of the Midnight Rider Stage trying to hold my head on as they were blasting juicy drum step at the crowd. The night of the show comes and I am getting geared up in a catsuit and long pink wig, art supplies in tow. I roll into the bar casually and forget that I look like a character from a super hero comic book, being reminded quickly from the faces of the crowd. Foggyswoggle starts off the night with some almost creepy, fluid, energetic swamp sounds, stirring up the crowd as he usually does, with his ear to ear grin and calm heart filled eyes. He truly enjoys doing what he does and it shows. After a while the Durians start setting up behind him and begin to play. I am standing there with my paint brush in hand taking it all in. I am thinking of how lucky I am to be in their presence and look across the room seeing faces of familiar friends enjoying the upswing in the energy of the room. The horns and drums are starting to lift and my heart fills to the point of tears. I am smiling and I close my eyes and start to cry. I walk over to my soul brother and smile and bury my teary face in his chest for a hug. Definitely an epic moment in my life that is worth remembering. I continue painting the canvas and go through my regular series of thoughts, from “oh what a mess, where is the white out, i should paint right over this.” And then as I continue it turns into…”hmm not too bad, ok, yep, I can maybe work with this…to meh, ima go dance and finish this at home.”And so I dance.
